8 Ways Georgia’s Entrepreneur Retreat Brought Me Out Of My Comfort Zone
Comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there.
Hey there moms, mamas, and mommys! It’s me again, your everyday mom with her everyday obstacles. I have a question for you, Have you gotten so set in your routine, that it is extremely uncomfortable for you to do something new or spontaneous? Me too, until my trip to Georgia.
Last week I won a trip to Savannah, Georgia to attend an entrepreneur all-expense paid retreat, with the exception of travel, of course. What’s better than a vacation? A free vacation! I’d received this news while on a much needed girl’s trip, and was accompanied by a few great college friends. No sooner had I informed them of my newly won vacation when they eagerly and immediately encouraged me to go.
I really wanted to go, however; I still had my own reservations about attending the retreat. My first thought was ‘who would watch Malik?’, while my second concern was my social anxiety. You see, i’m more of an introvert, and I have difficulty starting new conversations with others. I get extremely uncomfortable being amongst a group of individuals with the intention of mingling.
As for the following two days after winning my retreat getaway, I spent my time mentally going back and forth deciding If I should even go or not. On the last day before I left, I spent my time pondering about the retreat. I thought about all the moms I seek to help, how if they are faced with a decision that can help improve their lives what advice I would give to them? I will say “utilize your support systems and take a chance on yourself.” and so I did.
Thanks to my network of support, I scheduled a sitter for Malik, and I booked the flight. Although I made the commitment, I was still nervous about the lack of connection I could possibly have with the people there.
On the plane ride, I practiced the tips given to me by my friends to become less anxious and more confident in mingling. When I arrived at the hotel in Savannah, I settled my nerves with a glass of bubbly and walked up to people with fake confidence and with no hesitation, I began to tackle one of my biggest fears 1. “Mingling with random people” That fake confidence I emitted quickly turned into real confidence as the trip progressed.
Leaving my comfort zone became the theme of my trip, and I began to be more comfortable slowly tiptoeing out of my comfort zone.
- I explored the town of Savannah mostly by myself.
I am use to having a travel buddy to explore with but on this trip I enjoyed the sites and smoldered in the scenery alone.
3 . I experienced nature.
It’s not every day you see me walking into a class about insects and being surrounded by bees. I obtain a similar fear of being stung, like everyone else. Additionally, I don’t enjoy hot and sticky weather. With all that being said, I learned about bees and tasted honey from a bee hive. “I LITERALLY STUCK MY FINGER IN A BEE HIVE!!”
This experience helped shape a deeper appreciated for bees.
4.I ate Lima beans.
I took a cooking class (turns out I’ve been cooking all wrong) and I ate Lima beans. Let me explain by saying that I have always hated Lima beans, but it turns out I don’t dislike them like I thought. The chef informed the class that the number one reason people dislike Lima beans are because most of the time they are under-cooked! So, after this class, I’m now prepared to cook and enjoy them the proper way. Sorry Malik, lima beans are in your near future.
5.I did yoga by the pool.
I’ve always stayed away from yoga, or just never finished a session. With the yoga sessions by the pool, I was able to challenge my body in different ways of movement. From now on I think I will incorporate yoga into my life. Not anything too crazy maybe a class or two every month.
- I was surrounded by women that were on higher levels in their lives than I was.
I know this doesn’t seem like an out of comfort zone experience however, this pulled on my insecurities. I’m accustomed to not being the smartest or most motivated in the room, but at least being pretty high up there. With this group of women, I was the least successful and least experienced. It caused me to feel very uncomfortable. I was able to shift my feelings and decided to learn from these women on what makes them successful and to turn my insecurities into learning experience and inspiration.
- I took professional photo session with a successful photographer. If it’s not a selfie or a quick pic of Malik and I, Y’ALL I’M AWKWARD in front of the camera. This session helped me learn to be more comfortable in front of the camera.
8. I attended a workshop that assisted me to dream and set goals on a bigger scale. This is something that is challenging for me. When I do dream or set goals, I do it on a scale closer to my reality. I’m learning to dream outside the box
From this trip alone I feel motivated, energized, and empowered to continue life evolving and departing from comfort zone. Moms, Mamas, and Mommys, get out there and continue your growing process.
Thanks Georgia, It’s been Real!
